Uber has officially concluded its operations in Uganda, bringing a halt to its services in the Greater Kampala area after a decade. This exit, effective immediately on September 2, 2026, follows a comprehensive review of the company’s business priorities across Sub-Saharan Africa. The San Francisco-based tech firm communicated the decision to users and local partners through an official notice.
The departure from Uganda is coupled with a simultaneous shutdown in Nigeria, reducing Uber’s African footprint to Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, and South Africa. This strategic shift follows earlier exits from Tanzania in 2022 and Ivory Coast in 2025, with the company citing a focus on higher-yielding markets.
An Uber spokesperson confirmed the decision was specific to Nigeria and Uganda and emphasized the company’s continued commitment to the rest of the continent, highlighting robust growth and long-term opportunities elsewhere. The immediate priority is supporting drivers, riders, and local employees through the transition.
This move aligns with a significant global restructuring under CEO Dara Khosrowshahi, which includes eliminating approximately 3,300 corporate jobs worldwide. The company aims to streamline operations, reduce inefficiencies, and reinvest savings into core ride-sharing technology, delivery services, and autonomous vehicle research, with over $10 billion already earmarked for AV partnerships.
For thousands of Ugandan drivers and commuters, Uber’s exit represents a notable change in the local transport landscape. Competitors such as Faras, Bolt, and SafeBoda are expected to fill the void left by the ride-sharing pioneer. Uber has assured users that customer support will be available via the app for 21 days to address any outstanding issues, with rider data handled in accordance with privacy policies.
