Kiwafu Playground to Get Artificial Turf as AFCON 2027 Legacy Project

Minister of State for Sports, Peter Ogwang, has pledged a significant upgrade for Kiwafu Playground, promising an artificial playing surface as part of the legacy initiatives for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027. This commitment was made during the launch of the Shyaka Cup Entebbe 2026, a three-month football competition.

Ogwang emphasized that Kiwafu Playground will be among the first facilities to benefit from the government’s drive to improve sports infrastructure in preparation for hosting AFCON. He stated, “Under the AFCON 2027 legacy programme, I promise that Kiwafu Playground will be among the first beneficiaries and will receive an artificial playing surface.”

Beyond sports, the Minister also addressed issues within the education sector, urging local leaders in Entebbe Municipality to closely monitor schools allegedly charging fees to students enrolled in the Universal Primary Education (UPE) program. Furthermore, he revealed plans to establish a seed secondary school in Kigungu Cell to enhance educational access for communities near the landing site.

The Shyaka Cup commenced with a competitive match where Lugonjo Nakiwogo narrowly defeated Kiwafu Central 3-2. The tournament, organized by MP Steven Shyaka Gashaija, aims to identify and nurture football talent across all 24 villages in Entebbe Municipality. It is set to run until December 20, 2026, with participating teams receiving jerseys and equipment, and substantial prizes, including Shs30 million, up for grabs.
