First Family Rift: Muhoozi, Rwabwogo Publicly Clash Amid Succession Speculation

The long-standing discourse on who might succeed President Yoweri Museveni, previously confined to external observers, is now seemingly spilling into the heart of the First Family. Recent public exchanges between General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Chief of Defence Forces and President Museveni’s son, and Odrek Rwabwogo, the President’s son-in-law and chair of the Presidential Advisory Committee on Exports and Industrial Development (PACEID), suggest a deepening rift.

Muhoozi took to the social media platform X to accuse Rwabwogo and PACEID officials of corruption, even warning government agencies against engaging with the committee. This outburst occurred despite a supposed recent reconciliation meeting, facilitated by First Lady Janet Museveni, where Muhoozi had called for a truce.

Sources close to the family, speaking anonymously due to the sensitivity of the matter, suggest the conflict extends beyond PACEID and offers a glimpse into the unspoken question of Uganda’s future leadership. With the traditional opposition largely neutralized, the internal dynamics of the First Family have become a focal point of potential contestation.

While neither Muhoozi nor Rwabwogo has publicly framed their dispute as a succession battle, the intensity of their confrontation is seen by observers as intrinsically linked to the uncertainty surrounding Uganda’s political future, given President Museveni’s long tenure. Some reports indicate differing factions within the family, with one reportedly backing Muhoozi and another leaning towards Rwabwogo.

Adding another layer to the dispute, Rwabwogo has publicly voiced concerns about the shrinking civic space, intolerance, and the use of force against critics, issues that often intersect with controversies surrounding the army chief. He has emphasized the importance of dissent and the rule of law, even visiting a journalist imprisoned for alleged broadcasting without a license, arguing that force should not be the primary response to criticism.

The public fallout escalated with the arrest of a PACEID official, Matthew Bagonza, an action Rwabwogo condemned as a violation of human dignity and arbitrary. Rwabwogo maintains that PACEID operates with the President’s mandate and insists that any legal processes must adhere strictly to constitutional procedures, pushing back against claims of the committee’s illegality.

This high-profile clash between Muhoozi, a military leader central to succession talks, and Rwabwogo, a presidential appointee engaging in public policy debates, signifies that the dispute transcends personal animosity, touching upon fundamental issues of authority, governance, and the future direction of Uganda.
