Uganda Urges Enhanced Climate Finance for Food Security

Minister of State for Animal Industry, Bright Kanyontore Rwamirama, has underscored the critical link between climate change and Africa’s food security, emphasizing that it’s no longer solely an environmental issue.

Speaking at the Africa Food Systems Forum 2026 in Kigali, Rwanda, Rwamirama stated that climate change poses a direct threat to food production and rural economies on the continent. He stressed that climate action must prioritize boosting agricultural productivity and strengthening agrifood systems, ensuring that these efforts also lead to job creation and improved incomes for communities.

“For Africa, climate change is not just an environmental crisis, it is a direct threat to food security, jobs, and livelihoods,” Rwamirama articulated.

Uganda is actively working towards climate-resilient food systems by investing in key areas such as irrigation, renewable energy, climate-smart agricultural practices, and digital climate information services. The government is also promoting agro-processing and value addition to enhance farmer earnings throughout the agricultural value chain.

Rwamirama called for greater accessibility to climate finance, specifically grants and concessional funding, to empower African nations to invest in adaptive measures. He also highlighted the importance of stronger regional cooperation and community-led solutions, asserting that climate resilience must translate into tangible improvements in farmers’ incomes, nutrition, and overall rural development.

This plea comes at a time when African nations are facing mounting pressure to adapt their food systems to climate-related shocks while simultaneously increasing production to meet growing demand. Uganda’s approach aims to ensure that climate initiatives yield economic benefits at the community level, moving beyond a sole focus on environmental protection.

The Africa Food Systems Forum 2026 convenes governments and stakeholders to discuss strategies for transforming Africa’s food systems and bolstering their resilience against climate change and other emergent challenges.
