Uganda's Education Sector Urged to Foster Job Creation Over Job Seeking

Uganda’s Minister of Education and Sports, Dr. John Chrysostom Muyingo, has called for a significant transformation within the nation’s education sector. He emphasized the need for higher education institutions to move beyond simply preparing students for employment and instead focus on cultivating entrepreneurs and problem-solvers.
Speaking at the commissioning of a new classroom block at Makerere University Business School (MUBS), Dr. Muyingo highlighted the critical role of the Competence-Based Curriculum and Education and Training (CBET) framework, currently being implemented by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE). This new approach aims to equip graduates with practical competencies that align with the evolving demands of the economy.
The NCHE is guiding universities and tertiary institutions to adopt the CBET framework starting from the 2027/2028 academic year. This involves assessing and approving hundreds of programs to ensure they meet the new standards for skills development and job creation.
Dr. Muyingo also stressed the importance of maintaining educational quality amidst rapid expansion. Universities are facing increasing student enrollment, necessitating infrastructure growth. MUBS Principal, Prof. Moses Muhwezi, noted that the new classroom block would alleviate long-standing space shortages caused by a student population exceeding 27,000.
While acknowledging the role of online learning, Prof. Muhwezi asserted that physical classroom attendance remains vital for student concentration and effective learning. The completion of the new MUBS facility, a project supported by the Ministries of Education and Finance, signifies a step towards addressing these growing needs.
This strategic shift in the education sector is intended to foster innovation and self-sufficiency among Ugandan youth, contributing to national economic development by nurturing a generation of job creators.
