Road Upgrades Spark Development Boom in Wakiso Villages

Residents in several villages within Wakiso District are experiencing a remarkable upswing in local development and land values, directly attributed to recent road upgrades. The construction of key routes, including the 12.17-kilometre Bukasa-Ssentema-Kakiri Road, under the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area Urban Development Programme (GKMA-UDP), has transformed previously challenging terrains into hubs of economic activity.

Villagers report a dramatic increase in land prices, with plots that once sold for Shs15 million to Shs20 million now fetching Shs45 million and upwards. This surge is fueled by an influx of real estate developers and new residents eager to invest in areas that now boast improved accessibility and connectivity. Modern apartments and commercial structures are beginning to dot the landscape, a stark contrast to the area’s past challenges with dust and mud.

The improvements are also expected to benefit local businesses and transport providers. Boda boda riders, who previously struggled with dusty conditions deterring passengers, anticipate a significant boost in earnings. Shop owners are also seeing an increase in rental demand, with monthly rents rising. Some residents whose homes were affected by the construction have seen them rebuilt with modern amenities and even commercial spaces, offering new business opportunities.

Similar transformations are anticipated in Nansana Municipality with the Nansana-Wamala-Katooke road and the Kinjakaloli-Maganjo link. Local planners expect these projects to enhance land values, increase municipal revenue, and encourage redevelopment. The Nansana-Wamala-Katooke Road is also projected to boost tourism by improving access to the Wamala Cultural Tombs.

Government officials have highlighted that the selection of roads under the GKMA-UDP considered factors like historical significance, tourism potential, and connectivity. The Kitemu-Kisozi-Naggalabi road, for instance, was chosen for its access to the Naggalabi Coronation Site. These developments promise to not only improve daily commutes but also foster economic growth and better inter-community movement.
