Dei BioPharma, a Ugandan biotechnology company, has made a significant stride in cancer research by filing seven patent applications in the United States for its innovative mRNA cancer vaccine technologies. This move positions the company, led by founder Dr. Matthias Magoola, as a key player in the global pursuit of accessible, off-the-shelf cancer immunotherapies.
The patent portfolio is designed around a modular framework, utilizing a pre-manufactured library of mRNA vaccine candidates. These candidates are specifically engineered to target recurrent molecular events found across various cancer types and patient subgroups. The company emphasizes that cancer is not a single disease, and therefore, a one-size-fits-all vaccine is not feasible. Instead, their approach involves matching patients to a vaccine based on the unique molecular alterations within their tumor, and in some cases, their human leukocyte antigen (HLA) type, rather than solely on the cancer’s organ of origin.
Dr. Magoola, the lead inventor, submitted the applications to the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) between August 18 and 25. The filings cover a broad spectrum of potential cancer targets, including specific gene fusions like BCR-ABL, mutations such as EGFRvIII and those affecting RAS genes, and viral oncoproteins associated with HPV. An overarching omnibus architecture is also included, intended to support multiple target-specific products.
This development marks another milestone for Dei BioPharma and Dr. Magoola, who holds over 100 US patents. The company, established in 2014, operates a substantial manufacturing facility in Uganda and aims to make advanced biological medicines more affordable and accessible globally. Their long-term ambition is to build a robust platform capable of addressing the molecular drivers of a wide range of human cancers, ultimately making many forms of cancer preventable or more manageable.
