Ugandan biotechnology company Dei BioPharma has made a significant stride in cancer research by filing seven innovative patents with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). These patents cover a range of messenger RNA (mRNA) cancer vaccine technologies, positioning the company at the forefront of global efforts to develop accessible cancer immunotherapies.
The applications, led by Dei BioPharma founder Dr. Matthias Magoola, were submitted between August 18th and 25th. They address various cancer targets, including recurrent fusion junctions, driver mutations, viral oncoproteins, and a comprehensive platform design.
Dei BioPharma’s approach utilizes pre-manufactured vaccine candidates that target specific molecular changes recurring in defined patient groups. This strategy allows for personalized treatment based on a tumor’s molecular alterations and, when relevant, a patient’s HLA type, rather than the cancer’s origin organ.
Dr. Magoola expressed the company’s long-term vision: “Our ambition is global and deliberately long-term: to develop a modular immune platform capable of addressing the molecular drivers behind an expanding share of human cancers.” He added that these filings are crucial for building the scientific and manufacturing foundation to make many cancers preventable and controllable.
The seven patent applications specifically target conditions like fusion-positive leukemia (BCR-ABL), certain glioma subgroups (EGFRvIII), acute myeloid leukemia (NPM1), RAS-mutant tumors (RAS-hotspot), a specific TP53 mutation, HPV-driven cancers (HPV16/18), and an overarching platform architecture.
This development builds on Dei BioPharma’s extensive intellectual property portfolio, with Dr. Magoola holding over 100 US patents. The company, established in 2014, operates a large manufacturing facility in Matugga, Uganda, aiming to produce affordable vaccines and therapeutics for both African and global markets.
