Wakiso Approves New Service Commission, Vows to Combat Job Bribery

After nearly a year of operating without one, Wakiso District Council has finally approved a new four-member District Service Commission (DSC). This crucial appointment is set to accelerate the recruitment process for numerous vacant positions across various sectors, with a particular focus on the health and education departments which are facing significant staffing shortages.

The decision was made during a special council sitting where district leaders issued a stern warning to the newly appointed commissioners. They were cautioned against engaging in corrupt practices, including demanding money from job applicants in exchange for employment.

Mr. Jude Mark Bukenya, the Wakiso District Chief Administrative Officer, stated that the names of the approved commissioners will be forwarded to the Public Service Commission for final endorsement. Once this is complete, the district plans to advertise the vacant posts in the media next month. “We are not going to tolerate corruption,” Mr. Bukenya emphasized, urging the commission members to uphold integrity and transparency in their recruitment efforts.

Key positions such as District Health Officer and District Education Officer have been vacant for extended periods, impacting service delivery. The new commission is expected to expedite the process of filling these and other roles, many of which are currently held by individuals in acting capacities.

District Chairperson Eng. Ian Kyeyune expressed confidence in the chosen commissioners, citing their integrity and experience. He also reminded them of the legal provisions for removing DSC members who fail to meet expected standards, indicating the council’s commitment to accountability.

Dr. Timothy Mutesasira, the newly appointed DSC chairperson, pledged to contribute to cleaning up the district’s image and ensuring transparent recruitment. Other members, Bashir Sserunkuuma and Juliet Najjuma, also vowed to uphold integrity and combat corruption.

In related news, the council also approved a supplementary budget of Shs734 million for health interventions, including funding for the upcoming Measles-Rubella vaccination campaign. This financial boost aims to strengthen health systems and improve service delivery within the district.
