Ugandan technology startups are poised to explore new opportunities at the Africa Blockchain Festival (ABF) 2026, scheduled to take place in Nairobi from October 15-17. The event is expected to attract over 3,000 professionals from Africa’s digital economy, providing a crucial platform for local innovators to connect with potential investors, forge strategic partnerships, and expand their reach beyond Uganda.
The festival, themed “Capital, Code and Continuity: Building Africa’s Permanent Digital Economy,” will convene a diverse group of stakeholders including blockchain and AI experts, financial institutions, regulators, and technology companies. Exhibitions, panel discussions, and networking sessions are designed to foster connections between technology businesses and capital sources.
This event follows a successful previous edition in Rwanda, where two Ugandan startups achieved notable recognition, highlighting the nation’s growing competitiveness in the regional tech landscape. The growing adoption of mobile money, expansion of fintech, and increasing digital infrastructure are key drivers of Uganda’s digital economy, as noted by MTN Uganda CEO Sylvia Mulinge.
The Ugandan government is also increasing its focus on emerging technologies. The Ministry of ICT and National Guidance is developing a National AI and Emerging Technologies Strategy to explore applications in various sectors like agriculture, finance, and healthcare. This aligns with a broader African trend of leveraging technology to boost productivity and create jobs, while carefully managing associated risks.
Furthermore, Uganda is working towards a more structured approach to virtual assets. The Financial Intelligence Authority is integrating Virtual Asset Service Providers into the anti-money laundering framework, aiming to encourage responsible innovation and mitigate financial crime risks. Clearer regulations are anticipated to provide greater certainty for businesses operating in the digital asset space.
For Ugandan startups, the festival presents a vital opportunity to overcome challenges in accessing growth capital and scaling beyond the domestic market. The focus on demonstrating viable business models, customer bases, and revenue streams will be crucial for attracting investment. Ultimately, the festival’s success for Ugandan innovators will be measured by their ability to translate exposure into tangible growth, using regional platforms as a springboard for continental competitiveness.
