Police in Mityana District have apprehended eight teachers for allegedly violating the Ministry of Education and Sports’ directive against holiday coaching. The arrests occurred on August 25 during an operation at Glorious Junior School, initiated after authorities received information about ongoing academic activities.
Mityana Deputy Resident District Commissioner, Prossy Mwanjuzi, who spearheaded the operation, stated that the suspects were found imparting knowledge to students during the designated break period. She emphasized that holidays are meant for both teachers and learners to rest, engage in life skills development outside the classroom, or for school proprietors to undertake necessary repairs and infrastructure maintenance.
The arrests underscore a renewed government effort to enforce the ban on academic lessons during holidays. The Ministry of Education maintains that this period is crucial for students to rest, connect with families, and participate in non-academic activities. Similar enforcement actions are being observed in other regions, with Masaka City authorities also warning schools and educators against conducting unauthorized holiday classes.
Stephen Kakeeto, the Masaka City Education Officer, confirmed collaboration with security agencies to identify and apprehend any educators found teaching during this period. This proactive stance follows an incident where Masaka City Resident Commissioner, Ahmada Washaki, ordered students found at Universal Nursery and Primary School awaiting holiday lessons to be sent home.
School administrators and teachers are urged to adhere to the official academic calendar, ensuring the curriculum is adequately covered during the school terms. Authorities are committed to continuing operations to ensure compliance across all educational institutions.
