The way people consume news is changing, with a noticeable decrease in those actively seeking out news and an increase in individuals who passively encounter it. This shift categorizes individuals into ‘news lovers’—those who regularly tune into radio, read newspapers, or watch news channels—and ‘casual or passive news users’ who only catch headlines or brief news snippets incidentally.

A recent Digital News Report by the Reuters Institute highlights this trend, indicating a significant drop in people expressing strong interest in news since 2021. This decline is observed across numerous markets, with some countries like Argentina and the UK experiencing substantial decreases in their ‘news lover’ populations.

Conversely, the number of casual news users has grown, with a notable portion now consuming news only about once a week. This rise is closely linked to the increasing influence of social media platforms like YouTube and X (formerly Twitter), which have become primary conduits for casual news consumption, often encountered while users are engaged in other activities.

For journalists and media organizations, this presents a challenge in maintaining audience engagement and ensuring the sustainability of the news industry. The report emphasizes that trust is a crucial element in attracting and retaining audiences. Furthermore, the prevalence of violent and distressing news content is identified as a major driver of news avoidance.

Moving forward, media outlets are urged to rebuild trust and consider diversifying their reporting. Sharing more positive stories of hope and triumph, alongside their essential role in holding authorities accountable, could be key to re-engaging audiences. Striking a balance between impactful journalism and content that doesn’t overwhelm or alienate the public is crucial for the future of news consumption.
