New Social Protection Scheme for Informal Sector to Debut at Museveni Legacy Event

Upcoming celebrations honoring President Yoweri Museveni’s legacy will feature the launch of a significant social protection scheme designed for Uganda’s informal workforce. The event, scheduled for September 19 at Kololo Independence Grounds, will also highlight initiatives for East African integration and reforms within the boda boda sector.

Under the theme “A Legacy that Inspires Generations; Empowering Africa’s Youth for the Next Phase of Pan-African Revolution,” the event aims to engage young people in President Museveni’s Pan-African vision. Organizers, including the Gen Z for Gen Seven group, emphasize that deeper regional integration is crucial for expanding markets and opportunities for young entrepreneurs and businesses across East Africa.

The social protection scheme is particularly vital given the large proportion of Ugandans working in the informal sector. This program seeks to provide a safety net for individuals who may have savings but lack structured financial support during unexpected crises, such as accidents or health emergencies. The initiative aims to bridge this gap and offer much-needed security.

Additionally, the celebrations will address the boda boda sector, acknowledging its critical role in employment and local supply chains. While recognizing its economic importance, organizers also plan to tackle issues such as road safety, access to licensing, financial services, and rider training. Public perception of riders and the promotion of responsible values are also key components of this reform effort. Public sensitization is already underway through televised programs on Family TV.

These comprehensive initiatives underscore a commitment to empowering youth, strengthening regional ties, and providing essential support systems for vulnerable populations within Uganda’s economy.
