Dr. Okia: A Life Dedicated to Teaching and Pupil Success

Uganda is mourning the loss of Dr. Henry Stanley Okia, a respected educationist and former principal of Hillside Schools Naalya, who died on August 20, 2026, at the age of 69. Dr. Okia’s passing came after a cardiac arrest, marking the end of an illustrious career spanning more than four decades.

Dr. Okia’s journey in education began in 1987 as a teacher in Jinja. Despite facing challenging times, including the presence of rebels near his school, he remained committed to his students. His dedication later saw him transition to the private sector in 1997, where he held leadership roles at Lakeside Primary School and Entebbe Junior School before finding his long-term home at Hillside Schools Naalya in 2003.

At Hillside Schools, Dr. Okia was known for his profound influence on both students and teachers. Colleagues remember him as a mentor who fostered growth and a leader who significantly contributed to the school’s expansion. He was a strong advocate for continuous learning, encouraging teachers to pursue higher education, which led to a notable increase in master’s and doctoral degrees among the staff.

His passion for education extended beyond administrative duties; he continued to teach primary students, believing in their fundamental need for clear concept understanding. He was also known for his personal touch, offering support to parents in securing secondary school placements for their children. Dr. Okia’s commitment to his calling was evident even in his final days, emphasizing that teaching is a vocation where the reward lies in student success.

Dr. Okia’s legacy is one of deep commitment to education, mentorship, and the belief in unlocking the potential of every learner. He is survived by his wife and five university-graduate children. His former students and colleagues will remember his patience, fatherly approach, and unwavering dedication to shaping young minds.
