The long-awaited construction of Bunyoro University is set to kick off, following the approval of architectural designs and the mobilization of the UPDF Engineering Brigade to spearhead the first phase. Minister of State for Education and Sports, Hon. Peter Ogwang, announced that Shs4 billion has been earmarked in the current financial year to initiate the building of a multipurpose facility.

“We plan to start the phase with the available resources as we mobilise for additional funds. Government remains committed to the establishment of Bunyoro University,” Ogwang stated during a parliamentary sitting. This announcement came after Hoima City Woman Representative, Hon. Asinansi Nyakato, presented a motion advocating for the university’s establishment.

While the initial phase requires Shs177.5 billion, the Ministry of Finance is actively seeking supplementary funding. The government is also finalizing a Memorandum of Understanding with the UPDF Engineering Brigade to facilitate the commencement of construction activities within this financial year.

Hon. Nyakato emphasized that the university’s establishment is crucial for regional equity, skills development, and preparing the local population for the burgeoning oil and gas sector. She highlighted that the institution would offer specialized technical and professional training, foster research and innovation, and empower residents to participate effectively in the emerging oil economy.

Supporting the focus on industry-relevant programs, Bugangaizi East County MP, Hon. Onesimus Twinamasiko, noted the timely benefit of engineering and science courses. Hoima West Division MP, Hon. Ismail Kasule, pointed out the inequity of Bunyoro, with its 13 districts, lacking a public university.

Hon. Jane Avur Pacuto, Woman MP for Pakwach, urged the government to integrate the university firmly into National Development Plan IV, citing its potential to create employment, enhance human capital, and broaden the national tax base. The university is seen as a key initiative to address unemployment and strengthen the nation’s workforce.
