The Ministry of ICT and National Guidance in Uganda is implementing a strategy to enhance the visibility and market reach of its burgeoning ICT sector. Recognizing that access to markets and infrastructure are significant hurdles for local tech talent, the government is now actively promoting Ugandan innovations on global stages.
Through participation in international expos held in locations such as Dubai, Japan, Vietnam, and Morocco, the ministry is providing innovators with opportunities to showcase their work to a worldwide audience. Dr. Aminah Zawedde, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of ICT, stated that these expos are crucial for exposing young Ugandan talent to global trends and potential collaborators. Complementing this, the ministry is developing digital platforms, like BizLink, where innovators can register their projects, paving the way for broader marketing and commercialization.
This push is partly supported by the Uganda-Japan ICT Innovation Network Project (UJ-Connect), a collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The UJ-Connect project has already provided training and mentorship to over 600 ICT professionals, fostering stronger linkages with Japanese enterprises. As the project nears its end, its successful training and mentorship components are set to be integrated into the curriculum of the Uganda Institute of Information and Communications Technology (UICT).
Furthermore, the government plans to create a registry for ICT graduates to streamline recruitment for foreign investors and companies seeking local expertise. JICA Uganda Chief Representative, Mr. Osaki Mitsuhiro, acknowledged Uganda’s significant potential in ICT and expressed interest from international partners, stressing that sustained government support is vital for innovators to thrive internationally.
Despite the progress, challenges such as limited access to high-quality infrastructure persist, as noted by project beneficiaries. However, initiatives like the National ICT Initiatives Support Programme (NIISP) continue to run, aiming to create a sustainable market for local digital products and encourage their adoption across both public and private sectors.
