Speaker Oboth Vows to Expose Those Threatening Committee Chairpersons

Speaker Jacob Marksons Oboth has declared his intention to publicly identify and expose individuals attempting to intimidate parliamentary committee chairpersons. During a plenary session on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, Oboth stressed that committee leaders are executing their constitutional duties on behalf of the Parliament and the public.

“This is therefore, to caution those who are sending covert or overt threats to the chairpersons during the course of their work, to refrain,” Oboth stated. He firmly added, “I am not a Speaker who will shield those attempting to evade accountability.”

The Speaker’s warning underscores a commitment to upholding the integrity of parliamentary oversight. He emphasized that such intimidation tactics must cease immediately and signaled a strong stance against any interference in the legislative process.

This latest caution builds upon a previous directive on August 19, 2026, where Speaker Oboth urged accounting officers to comply with committee summonses, highlighting their constitutional obligation to be accountable to citizens through Parliament.

Furthermore, with a three-week recess approaching from September 3 to 29, 2026, Oboth encouraged committees to expedite their work and present business for the House’s consideration. He also called on the Leader of Government Business to ensure that all planned Bills are introduced promptly for timely review.
