Ugandan Drivers Lament How Poor Roads Wreck Vehicles, Increase Costs

Drivers in Uganda are expressing frustration over the significant toll that poor road conditions are taking on their vehicles, leading to frequent breakdowns and escalating repair costs. Potholes, uneven surfaces, and dusty stretches are becoming a major concern for taxi operators, who argue that these issues contribute to accelerated wear and tear on essential vehicle components.

“We want safe vehicles and we want our commuters to be safe. But the roads also need to be worked on. You cannot keep repairing a vehicle while it is being damaged by the same road every day,” lamented Samuel Karungi, a taxi operator. Drivers often find themselves in dangerous situations, forced to choose between hitting a pothole or swerving into potentially hazardous traffic.

Mechanics confirm that the suspension system is particularly vulnerable. Components like shock absorbers, ball joints, and control arms are subjected to intense stress from repeated impacts, leading to premature failure. “When a vehicle keeps hitting potholes, the suspension components take the impact. You can start hearing knocking sounds, the vehicle may become unstable or the tyres may begin wearing unevenly,” explained mechanic James Kaketo.

Beyond suspension damage, deep potholes can also lead to bent wheel rims and misaligned wheels, necessitating costly replacements. Furthermore, rough roads and congestion exacerbate the use of clutches and gears in manual vehicles. This constant braking, accelerating, and gear changing puts additional strain on the clutch system, a critical expense for drivers who rely on their vehicles for income.

Dust is another significant contributor to vehicle problems, especially on unpaved roads. If air filters are neglected, dust can enter the engine, impairing performance and potentially causing long-term damage. Operators are advised to adhere to regular servicing schedules to prevent minor issues from escalating into major mechanical failures.
