Kagame Urges African Youth: Choose Purpose Over Fear

Rwandan President Paul Kagame has implored the continent’s young people to actively shape their destiny, asserting that genuine transformation stems from the courage to make tough decisions and reject undesirable situations.

Speaking at the Africa Mindset Reset Forum in Kigali, Kagame challenged attendees to cultivate a sense of purpose, using it as a catalyst to influence both their personal lives and the broader societal landscape.

Drawing from his own experiences, the president highlighted that difficult conditions do not have to dictate the trajectory of one’s life. He recalled that during his youth, the hardships faced became a impetus to question and change existing realities rather than passively accept them.

“Together with others, we decided to shape the kind of life we wanted, irrespective of the fact that the life we were looking for might not be lived,” Kagame stated, acknowledging the significant risks involved in pursuing a different path.

He warned against succumbing to the fear of failure or criticism, which can stifle innovation and discourage the pursuit of potentially riskier but ultimately beneficial choices. The president also critiqued the tendency within Africa to admire external achievements without critically examining why similar successes cannot be replicated domestically.

“Why can’t we do things that make us admire ourselves?” he questioned, cautioning that a constant reliance on external models can foster a subordinate mindset. Kagame urged aspiring young leaders to be ready to challenge established norms and embrace the accountability that accompanies their decisions.

The Africa Mindset Reset Forum convenes leaders, academics, and emerging talent to discuss the mindset, leadership, and institutional shifts necessary for accelerating Africa’s development.
