Uganda Airlines is charting a course for significant expansion, with plans to launch domestic flights alongside its existing international network. The national carrier intends to broaden its reach to destinations in Asia, Europe, and other African nations, signaling a robust effort to strengthen its commercial operations.
This ambitious strategy was presented to Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba by the airline’s leadership, including Acting CEO Girma Wake. The focus will be on optimizing the utilization of their current aircraft fleet to support both international growth from Entebbe and cater to the burgeoning demand for air travel within Uganda.
Furthermore, Uganda Airlines aims to bring key services like aircraft maintenance and ground handling in-house. This initiative is projected to reduce operational costs and build crucial internal technical expertise within the airline.
To support these expansionary goals and reduce dependency on foreign expertise, the carrier also plans to increase training for Ugandan aviation personnel. These changes are part of a broader structural overhaul designed to improve corporate governance and ensure the airline’s long-term commercial success.
The airline’s management emphasized that the success of these plans is contingent on continued support from the government and stakeholders in the aviation sector. Gen. Kainerugaba expressed his backing for the airline’s vision, highlighting the importance of a strong national carrier for Uganda’s trade, regional integration, and economic development.
