Climate Shocks Devastate Northern Uganda Farmers, Threatening Livelihoods

Farmers in the northern Ugandan districts of Lamwo and Pader are on the brink of a crisis, battling the escalating impacts of climate change. Unpredictable weather, characterized by extended dry spells, sudden heavy downpours, and rising temperatures, is severely disrupting agricultural activities, a cornerstone of the region’s economy.
These volatile climate shifts are leading to diminished crop yields and reduced household incomes. Farmers are struggling to adapt as traditional planting seasons become unreliable. Vegetation condition indices in areas like Paloga, Agoro, and Madiopei sub-counties indicate severe dryness, impacting pasture and water availability. Meanwhile, low-lying regions such as Palabek (Kal, Ogili, and Gem) are susceptible to waterlogging and flash floods, which damage homes and farmland.
Compounding these issues is the increasing variability in global climate phenomena like the El Niño Southern Oscillation, which further complicates rainfall patterns. Local residents report delayed rainy seasons, short bursts of rain followed by long droughts, and shifts in seasonal timing, directly affecting the growth of staple crops like maize, beans, millet, and rice. For those who rely on livestock, seasonal water sources are drying up prematurely.
In neighboring Pader District, similar challenges are being faced. Once reliable cereal-producing areas are now experiencing declining yields. Crops like groundnuts, sesame, pigeon peas, soybeans, millet, and sorghum, which were historically successful in belts across Pader, Puranga, Acholibur, and Pajule sub-counties, are now frequently lost to either flooding before maturity or premature drought.
Experts and local officials are urging a shift towards climate-resilient agricultural practices. This includes promoting drought-resistant crops and exploring options like coffee, cocoa, bananas, and agroforestry, which are better equipped to withstand harsh weather. Investments in water harvesting, soil conservation, and flood mitigation are also deemed crucial for safeguarding food security and strengthening community resilience in the face of these growing climate threats.
