UMSC and Malaysia's HDC Eye Partnership to Grow Uganda's Halal Sector

The Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) has signaled its commitment to developing Uganda’s halal industry, aiming to leverage the nation’s potential for growth in the global halal economy. This was communicated by Deputy Mufti Sheikh Muhammad Ali Waiswa during a meeting with a delegation from Malaysia’s Halal Development Corporation (HDC).

Sheikh Waiswa highlighted Uganda’s significant agricultural output, particularly in livestock and food, alongside its growing manufacturing and service sectors. He emphasized that a robust halal ecosystem could not only serve the Muslim community but also create substantial economic opportunities for local producers, businesses, and exporters.

Uganda intends to draw upon Malaysia’s extensive experience in establishing a comprehensive halal system that integrates religious principles with scientific standards and quality assurance. The UMSC stressed the importance of a halal value chain that encompasses everything from primary production and processing to retail and international export.

The council pledged its support in working with government bodies, the Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS), the Muslim community, and the private sector to foster a reliable and credible halal industry. “We are ready to contribute to Uganda’s development of the halal industry and to work closely with all relevant stakeholders,” stated Sheikh Waiswa.

During the discussions, UMSC Secretary General Hadji Abbas Muluubya Ssekyanzi expressed keen interest in adapting Malaysia’s institutional frameworks and lessons learned to Uganda’s specific context. The goal is to create a halal system that is Sharia-compliant, technically sound, legally robust, and accessible to all, from grassroots producers to consumers, ultimately positioning Uganda to compete effectively in the international halal market.
