Robusta coffee farmers across Uganda are staring down the barrel of a difficult season. Reports indicate that developing flower buds on coffee plants have begun to die off, a disheartening sign for the upcoming harvest. This phenomenon is largely attributed to the erratic weather patterns that have become increasingly common, disrupting the delicate agricultural cycles.
The challenges extend beyond the immediate agricultural impact. Farmers are grappling with escalating costs of essential inputs such as fertilizers, pesticides, and labor. The price of a 50kg bag of fertilizer, for instance, has reportedly doubled, placing immense financial strain on smallholder farmers who often operate on tight margins. This makes it increasingly difficult for them to invest in the necessary resources to ensure a healthy crop.
Compounding these issues is the declining global market price for coffee, which further erodes potential profits. Farmers are caught in a pincer movement of rising production costs and falling commodity prices, leaving many questioning the viability of their operations. The situation is particularly acute for Robusta farmers, whose crop is sensitive to climatic shifts and market fluctuations.
Experts are warning that without adequate support and intervention, the agricultural sector, a cornerstone of Uganda’s economy, could face significant downturns. This could have ripple effects, impacting food security and rural employment. There is an urgent need for measures to support farmers, including access to affordable inputs, climate-resilient farming techniques, and stable market access.
Farmers are urged to explore diversification and adopt adaptive strategies to mitigate the risks associated with climate change and market volatility. The resilience of Uganda’s agricultural backbone is being tested, and the coming months will be critical in determining the sector’s future. This report is based on information from the Daily Monitor.
