NAGRC Revolutionizes Uganda's Livestock Sector from the Ground Up

The National Animal Genetic Resources Centre and Genebank (NAGRC&G) is making significant strides in modernizing Uganda’s agricultural landscape, particularly within the vital livestock sector. Through a comprehensive five-year investment plan, the agency is actively working to accelerate advancements in animal breeding and the conservation of genetic resources.

NAGRC&G’s approach emphasizes improving the quality and productivity of indigenous livestock breeds, which are crucial for the livelihoods of many Ugandan farmers. By introducing advanced breeding techniques and providing access to superior genetic materials, the agency aims to boost livestock yields in terms of meat, milk, and other products. This initiative is expected to lead to increased income for farmers and contribute to national food security.

Furthermore, the centre is focused on establishing and maintaining a robust genebank. This facility serves as a critical repository for the genetic diversity of Uganda’s livestock, safeguarding valuable breeds against diseases, environmental changes, and other potential threats. The preservation of these genetic resources is paramount for future breeding programs and for maintaining the resilience of the national herd.

The agency’s efforts extend to capacity building, equipping farmers and veterinary professionals with the knowledge and tools necessary to implement modern livestock management practices. This holistic strategy, from grassroots education to advanced genetic conservation, underscores NAGRC&G’s commitment to a sustainable and prosperous future for Uganda’s livestock sector.
