An American Airlines flight experienced a concerning incident when a passenger’s laptop caught fire, leading to one individual receiving medical treatment. The pilot alerted air traffic control to a “cabin fire in the back of the airplane,” noting that flight attendants were actively working to extinguish the blaze.
According to audio recordings, the fire affected approximately four to five passengers who sustained burns from the laptop. The device was ultimately contained mid-aircraft.
American Airlines Flight 2398, en route from Atlanta, Georgia, landed safely at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport in Texas. Upon arrival, emergency personnel met the aircraft as per standard procedure. The airline commended its crew for their “professionalism and swift response.”
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) attributes such incidents to the nature of lithium batteries, which can overheat due to damage, improper charging, or exposure to moisture. This year alone, the FAA has recorded 58 incidents involving lithium batteries, with laptops being a significant source of issues over the past two decades.
Regulators emphasize that lithium batteries must be transported in carry-on baggage only, due to the inherent risks they pose when packed in checked luggage. This incident underscores the importance of adhering to safety guidelines for electronic devices on board aircraft.
