Veteran Educationist Dr. Henry Okia Dies After Collapsing at Hospital

Dr. Henry Stanley Okia, a distinguished educator and the principal of Hillside Schools Naalya, has died following a collapse at a medical facility. Dr. Okia, who had been at the helm of the nursery and primary sections since 2003, was a prominent figure in education for over four decades, leaving behind a significant legacy as a teacher, administrator, and mentor.

Just days before his passing, Dr. Okia was reportedly in good spirits, actively participating in preparations for the school’s cultural event. Colleagues and parents recall him as a deeply committed and accessible leader, always ready to address concerns and foster strong relationships between the school and parents.

While Dr. Okia had previously managed diabetes, it was understood he was also experiencing some cardiovascular issues and was scheduled for a medical check-up. Tragically, he collapsed shortly after arriving at the hospital for the examination.

Dr. Okia’s career in education began in 1980 after attending Namutamba Primary Teachers’ College. He progressed from a Grade Two teacher to earn a PhD in Educational Planning from Kyambogo University. He held various teaching and leadership roles, including head teacher at Entebbe Junior School, before joining Hillside Schools.

Despite his administrative achievements, Dr. Okia remained passionate about teaching, often instructing Social Studies and Religious Education, and was known for his dedication to foundational education. He frequently advised aspiring educators to prioritize service and commitment over immediate financial rewards, emphasizing the profound impact of teaching on shaping future generations.

His enduring commitment to primary education was a cornerstone of his career, allowing him to gain extensive expertise in teaching, learning, and institutional management, which he also applied to consultancy work. Dr. Okia’s influence extended beyond the classroom, contributing to his ability to provide for his family and build homes.

Dr. Okia’s sudden death is a profound loss to the Hillside Schools community and the broader educational landscape in Uganda. His dedication to nurturing young minds and his unwavering commitment to the profession will be remembered by all who knew him.
