TikTok Declines Irish Parliamentary Invite Over Dangerous Driving Videos

TikTok has declined an invitation to discuss the proliferation of dangerous driving videos on its platform with an Irish parliamentary committee. The decision comes in the wake of a tragic incident where five teenagers died in a head-on collision while driving the wrong way on a motorway in County Kildare.

In a letter to the Oireachtas Committee on Media, a TikTok spokesperson stated they could not attend due to ongoing police investigations by An Garda Síochána and a separate examination by Ireland’s media regulator, Coimisiún na Meán. The platform also noted that it was the only social media company asked to appear, questioning the appropriateness of being the sole representative for the video-sharing industry under these circumstances.

Alan Kelly, the media committee chair, had requested TikTok’s presence to address “content that glorifies irresponsible or illegal activity.” He expressed deep disappointment with TikTok’s refusal, calling it “unacceptable” and “a slap in the face to the Irish public.” Kelly urged the platform to reconsider, dismissing the ongoing investigation as an excuse and expressing willingness to invite other social media companies if TikTok preferred.

Coimisiún na Meán had previously asked TikTok to detail its response to risky and reckless driving content. TikTok had previously stated it was monitoring such content and removing videos and accounts violating its community guidelines.

The tragic motorway crash claimed the lives of five teenagers, with the Irish child and family agency, Tusla, confirming one of the deceased was in its care and two were known to the agency. The occupants of the other vehicle, three women and a seven-year-old boy, were injured, with two women in critical condition.

Tusla is working with relevant agencies to provide support to those affected by the incident and will share information with the National Review Panel for an independent review of the incident. TikTok has been asked to outline its response to risky content on its platform.
