A total of 9,596 pupils are sitting for the 2026 Islamic Primary Leaving Examinations (IPLE), which commenced nationwide on Wednesday, August 19. Organized by the Uganda Qur’an Schools’ Association Examinations Board (UQSAEB), the exams are being held at 390 centers, an increase from last year’s 280 centers.

The examinations, spanning two days, will cover subjects including Arabic Language, Tarbiya (Islamic tradition), the Qur’an, and Fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence). Each paper is allocated two hours.

Dr. Jjemba Haruna Abdulhamid, the Secretary General of the Uganda Qur’an Schools’ Association (UQSA), noted that the rise in candidates and examination centers reflects a growing enthusiasm for Islamic education and the integration of dual curricula in schools. To manage this expansion and maintain standards, UQSA has trained additional examiners and intensified sensitization efforts to inform interested institutions about the examination system.

Schools participating in the exams report strong preparation. Madina Islamic Junior School in Katereke has 155 candidates ready, with the school director, Hajji Abdunoor Busulwa, expressing confidence in their readiness and adequate preparation.

Similarly, Bukhaary Junior School has 89 candidates participating. While school directors are optimistic about student performance, concerns have been raised regarding the timing of the examinations. Holding IPLE during school holidays incurs additional costs for schools due to the need for accommodation and supervision of learners. Suggestions have been made to conduct these exams during the regular school term to alleviate this financial burden.

The UQSA serves as the governing body for Qur’an and Islamic theology schools in Uganda, responsible for setting and overseeing the Islamic Primary Leaving Examinations.
