State House Initiative Aims to Equip 500 Youth Per Division to Combat Unemployment

The State House has launched a significant youth empowerment initiative aimed at tackling unemployment and economic vulnerability across Uganda. The Youth Wealth Creation Programme, initiated in 2022, focuses on equipping underprivileged and urban youth with the necessary tools to establish and grow their own businesses.

Under the program, each administrative division is slated to benefit 500 young people. This strategic approach seeks to move beneficiaries from subsistence activities into commercially viable ventures. The support provided includes crucial business equipment such as tailoring machines, salon kits, and woodworking tools, alongside comprehensive training in enterprise management and access to capital.

State House Controller Jane Barekye oversees the program, which has already seen distributions in areas like Kamwokya and Lubaga. The broader objective is to empower young people, particularly those in disadvantaged communities, who often face limited access to employment and business opportunities. Officials believe this intervention can help reduce crime rates, which are sometimes linked to youth unemployment.

While acknowledging that the program may not entirely eradicate unemployment, commentators suggest it can significantly contribute to reducing it. The initiative encourages young people to take initiative by embracing entrepreneurship rather than solely relying on formal employment. Managers emphasize that the program’s focus on ghetto and urban youth is deliberate, targeting those most at risk of joblessness.

Beneficiaries are set to receive ongoing monitoring to ensure the productive use of resources and the sustainable growth of their enterprises. This grassroots intervention is designed to improve household incomes and contribute to overall community stability.
