The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has officially nominated six individuals vying for the party’s ticket in the Adjumani West parliamentary by-election. This crucial election follows the passing of General Moses Ali, the former First Deputy Prime Minister and a long-serving Member of Parliament for the constituency.
The nominated candidates are Ben Anyama, Nixon Owole, James Pilli Leku, Justine Mawadri, Richard Madrara Obuni, and Daniel Izale. The nomination process, overseen by the NRM Electoral Commission, is part of the party’s strategy to consolidate its support and present a united front in the by-election.
Ambassador James Williams Kinobe, Commissioner of the NRM Electoral Commission, stated that the party is exploring options for consensus among the aspirants to avoid a divisive primary election. He emphasized that while nominations have been made, the process is ongoing, with continuous engagements planned to unify the candidates.
“Expression of interest is not final. Candidates can express interest but lose interest before the time of nomination. Even nomination is not final because engagements are going to continue until the campaigns and the primaries, until we get one candidate,” Kinobe explained.
Should consensus fail, an NRM primary election is scheduled for September 3, 2026. The party leadership has urged all aspirants to conduct peaceful campaigns and warned against independent candidates who might split the party’s vote. Joint campaigns are slated to run from August 20 to September 1, 2026.
The official nomination for the parliamentary by-election by the National Electoral Commission is scheduled for September 7-8, 2026, with voting set for September 17, 2026.
