Ben Kiwanuka Street, a vital artery in Kampala’s central business district, has been temporarily closed by the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) to allow for significant road and drainage improvements.
The closure, which commenced on Tuesday, August 18, is set to last until September 5, affecting one of the city’s busiest commercial hubs. This measure is being taken to enable contractors to undertake extensive excavation, rockfill, and drainage line construction.
KCCA aims to accelerate these crucial works before the onset of seasonal rains, which could impede progress and cause further delays. The authority emphasized that the road closure is necessary for the swift and efficient completion of the project.
Ben Kiwanuka Street connects key areas, including Entebbe Road and Clock Tower, to other central business district routes. The closure is expected to impact motorists, pedestrians, and numerous businesses operating along this busy corridor.
To mitigate inconvenience, KCCA has stated that clear warning signs will be installed, and safe detours will be provided. Traffic police will also be deployed to guide traffic and minimize disruptions. Motorists are advised to plan their journeys and utilize alternative routes such as Sebaana Road, Sikh Road, and Entebbe Road, among others.
This closure is part of KCCA’s broader initiative to enhance Kampala’s road infrastructure and improve transportation within the city center. The authority has requested patience from the public during this period of temporary disruption, assuring that the improvements will lead to a safer and more efficient road network.
