Transport workers in Kamuli are embarking on a mission to elevate their industry by prioritizing professional development, passenger safety, and financial well-being. The newly formed Kamuli-Jinja-Kampala Drivers and Conductors Association, established during a recent annual general meeting, aims to achieve this through a comprehensive approach.
The association’s renewed leadership, headed by Chairman Saadi Alibawa, has pledged to focus on critical areas such as modern and defensive driving techniques. This initiative is geared towards significantly reducing road crashes and improving overall road safety. Furthermore, the organization intends to foster financial literacy and encourage saving habits among its members.
“We are bringing in transformative, inclusive and developmental leadership based on laws, regulations and policies, with a focus on financial discipline, customer relations and keeping ourselves updated with current trends,” stated Mr. Alibawa. He emphasized the necessity of regular refresher training to keep drivers informed about evolving road safety standards and to enhance the quality of service provided to passengers.
Beyond technical skills, the association plans to host talks by various professionals to equip members with expertise in financial management, personal development, hygiene, and customer care. The vision is to cultivate a workforce that is not only skilled but also possesses a high degree of integrity and strict adherence to traffic regulations, acting as positive role models and community contributors.
Local authorities have welcomed this move, commending the drivers and conductors for their proactive organization. Abbas Bukenya, Kamuli District Internal Security Officer, highlighted the vital role transport workers play in community security and urged the association to actively prevent criminal infiltration by maintaining updated member records. He also encouraged formal registration to access government support programs.
The association’s efforts are seen as a crucial step towards a more professional, safe, and disciplined transport sector in the region. The commitment to continuous training and adherence to regulations is expected to benefit both the drivers and the commuting public alike.
