A promising UPDF recruitment drive for 10,200 personnel has been overshadowed by a defilement case that has ended a young man’s military ambitions. The 20-year-old, from Agali village in Otuke District, had successfully passed the initial stages and reported for the physical screening exercise with UPDF Recruitment Team Six.
However, his hopes were dashed as security operatives had been tracking him since his details appeared on the list of successful candidates displayed at the Otuke District Headquarters. His arrest stems from an alleged defilement case dating back to 2025, specifically referenced under SD27/06/07/2025 at Otuke Police Station, involving a 16-year-old girl.
Colonel Gai Frasser Mpaddwa, the team leader for Recruitment Team Six, stated that the UPDF does not enlist individuals with criminal accusations. The suspect was subsequently handed over to the Deputy Resident Commissioner of Otuke, who then transferred him to the police for processing and custody. Major Bilal Katamba, Public Information Officer for Team Six, confirmed the arrest, emphasizing the UPDF’s commitment to admitting only crime-free youth.
This stringent vetting process, which includes recommendations from local authorities and DISOs, is crucial for ensuring the integrity of the armed forces. The suspect remains in police custody as investigations continue. The ongoing UPDF recruitment, which targets individuals with UCE and UACE qualifications, has seen massive turnout across the country but has also faced issues such as forged documents and bribery attempts in various locations.
