Tragedy struck the island of Salamina near Athens on Sunday as two separate wildfires ignited within minutes of each other, resulting in two fatalities and the evacuation of hundreds of residents.

The first fire was reported in the afternoon in a residential area on the island’s southern coast, quickly spreading due to strong winds. Firefighters arriving at the scene discovered the bodies of two people, believed to be a couple, in the Peristeria area. A second fire broke out shortly after in the eastern part of the island.

Authorities worked through the evening to contain the fires, with one blaze being brought under control. Approximately 500 people were evacuated from Salamina by sea. Several individuals suffered burns or smoke inhalation, with at least five requiring medical treatment.

Over 200 firefighters, supported by aircraft, fire engines, and water tankers, were engaged in the effort to prevent the two fires from merging. The cause of the blazes remains under investigation. Two coast guard vessels and a fire department vessel were stationed in the area for ongoing surveillance and assistance.

This incident occurs amidst a challenging wildfire season across Europe, with other countries like Belgium and Croatia also battling significant blazes that have led to evacuations and casualties. The EU’s climate monitoring service has indicated record-breaking temperatures in Western Europe during June and July, contributing to the heightened risk of wildfires.
