A physical altercation at a Singaporean food court has prompted a police investigation after an elderly man was reportedly assaulted for patting a young child’s head. The incident occurred on Saturday when the 73-year-old man, who was walking past a table, gently patted the head of a young girl.

Video footage shows a man, believed to be the child’s father, confronting the elderly man after what appears to be a brief exchange. The younger man then allegedly grabbed the elder and pushed him to the ground. The security camera footage of the incident quickly went viral online, drawing widespread condemnation of the physical response to the gesture.

Police have stated they have identified a 40-year-old man involved and are urging the public not to speculate on the ongoing investigation. The elderly man, in his 70s and with prior leg and hip injuries, was reportedly in pain following the fall. While the alleged assailant later apologized and offered a drink, the victim’s son expressed that the apology and drink did not negate the physical pain his father experienced.

The elderly man told Channel News Asia that he found the child “very adorable” and that it is common for older people to pat young children’s heads. He began experiencing back pain hours after the incident and sought pain relief. His son has publicly thanked the police for their prompt response and expressed hope for justice.
