The Archdiocese of Mbarara Development Association (AMDA) is appealing for more than Shs500 million to bolster healthcare and education services in Nyabwinaaw2 Parish, Sheema District. Key projects include the construction of a girls’ dormitory and the establishment of a much-needed computer laboratory.
The fundraising efforts officially commenced with the AMDA Caravan Run held in Nyabwina. This event serves as a cornerstone for mobilizing resources to tackle pressing community needs.
AMDA Chairperson Chris Gumisiriza highlighted that approximately 40 percent of the target funds have already been secured. The Caravan Run itself saw enthusiastic participation, with around 1,200 individuals registering by acquiring participation kits.
Nyabwina was chosen as the host parish due to its pronounced educational deficiencies, healthcare gaps, and geographical isolation. The broader AMDA Caravan activities are projected to benefit approximately 6,000 individuals in Nyabwina and surrounding areas, offering support across healthcare, education, legal aid, and community engagement.
A medical camp, offering services like cancer screening, HIV testing and counseling, and dental and eye care, was a key component of the run. This outreach aims to bring specialized and preventive healthcare closer to residents who often face long journeys for such services.
Dr. Rosemary Byanyima, executive director of Mulago National Referral Hospital, stressed the importance of preventive healthcare and regular check-ups, encouraging early detection of diseases. She also emphasized the health benefits of regular physical activity.
The educational component focuses on St Thomas Secondary School, with plans for a computer laboratory and a girls’ dormitory. A baseline assessment revealed a critical lack of adequate computer facilities and proper boarding accommodation, particularly for girls, exacerbating the challenges posed by the new curriculum’s increased demand for digital resources.
The wider Caravan program will also encompass specialized healthcare services, legal assistance, leadership engagements, and community sensitization initiatives. Additionally, a mass wedding is planned for over 38 couples.
AMDA, an organization uniting Catholics from Mbarara and surrounding regions, utilizes its annual Caravan to channel development support back to communities within the Archdiocese.
