A fire ignited by the uncontrolled burning of rubbish has left a 73-year-old resident of Kalongo Village in Luweero District homeless. The blaze, which began around 5:40 PM on Sunday, quickly escalated and spread to a neighboring property due to strong winds.
Ahmed Ndawula, the affected resident, explained that while he was burning rubbish, a sudden gust of wind carried the flames to his makeshift structure. The fire rapidly consumed his home and then spread to the rooftop of six rooms belonging to his neighbor, Ismael Suuna.
Both residents lost a significant amount of their belongings in the fire. Ndawula has appealed to the government, particularly the Office of the Prime Minister, for assistance, stating he has nothing left.
Residents initially attempted to douse the flames but were overwhelmed by the fire’s intensity. The Police Fire and Rescue Services were eventually called to the scene and managed to extinguish the blaze. Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities were reported.
Savannah Regional Police spokesperson ASP Sam Twineamazima has issued a stern warning against the practice of burning rubbish in open spaces, especially during dry or windy weather. He emphasized the severe risk such fires pose to life and property.
Police are also urging local authorities in Luweero Town Council to collaborate with community leaders to implement and enforce safer waste management strategies, aiming to prevent future occurrences of this nature.
