South Africa’s SAfm is celebrating 90 years of broadcasting, a significant milestone that serves as a powerful reminder of radio’s enduring relevance in our increasingly digital world.
From its beginnings in 1936, SAfm, then a Johannesburg broadcasting station, grew into the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), the nation’s first national radio service. Over nine decades, it has evolved, becoming a cornerstone for news, entertainment, and public dialogue, influencing culture, politics, and social behavior across Africa.
The digital revolution has introduced new platforms, leading many, particularly younger generations like Gen Z and millennials, to question radio’s place. However, radio possesses a unique ability to forge intimate connections. The human voice, music, and soundscapes can evoke deep emotions and a sense of companionship that algorithm-driven platforms struggle to replicate.
In an era rife with misinformation and disinformation, radio stands out as a crucial source of verified information and professional journalism. While social media and AI accelerate information dissemination, they don’t always guarantee accuracy. Traditional media, including radio, faces challenges from declining trust and commercial pressures.
To remain vital, radio must embrace, not reject, new technologies. By integrating social media platforms, radio can expand its reach, engage younger audiences through podcasts, gather feedback, and extend conversations beyond broadcast hours.
SAfm’s 90th anniversary is a testament to radio’s persistent role in giving people a voice, fostering public discourse, holding leaders accountable, and contributing to societal development. It remains a powerful medium for entertainment, advertising, and nurturing new talent.
