President Yoweri Museveni has commended Ssabanyala Maj (rtd) Baker Kimeze Mpagi Byarufu II, the cultural leader of Bunyala, for his significant contributions to unity and peaceful coexistence among his people. The President, whose remarks were delivered by Second Deputy Prime Minister Dr. Crispus Kiyonga at the Ssabanyala’s 18th coronation anniversary, highlighted that peace and stability are essential prerequisites for national development.
“Peace, stability and unity are a precursor for development. All these 18 years, there has been peace and unity among the different tribes in Kayunga, and I want to thank the Ssabanyala for this,” stated Museveni. He added that promoting unity and combating sectarian tendencies aligns directly with the NRM government’s manifesto. The ceremony took place at the Ibaale Cultural Site in Bbaale Sub-county, Kayunga District.
The President also praised Ssabanyala Kimeze for his efforts in advancing both economic and cultural development, noting that the NRM government’s restoration of cultural institutions aims to cultivate cultural pride and a sense of togetherness.
During the event, Ssabanyala Kimeze echoed the importance of unity and urged his subjects to actively combat poverty through hard work, while also acknowledging President Museveni’s support for cultural institutions. The occasion was attended by other notable figures, including the Buruli cultural leader, Mwogeza Butamanya, and Kenya’s High Commissioner to Uganda, Ababu Namwamba, both of whom stressed the critical link between peace, unity, and development.
The anniversary celebrations, themed “My Culture, My Identity, a Collective Responsibility,” occurred amidst a recent family dispute where a faction elected Fred Sseruzi as a rival Ssabanyala.
