The Cricket Cranes have punched their ticket to the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier Play-off, marking a significant milestone in their pursuit of the 2027 World Cup. Uganda secured their spot in the top two of the Challenge League B after Italy defeated Hong Kong in a crucial match.
This victory over Hong Kong mathematically eliminated them from contention for the top positions, leaving Uganda, currently second in the standings, with an unassailable lead. The Cranes will now join Italy in the eight-team play-off, where they will have the opportunity to compete for ODI status.
This qualification is particularly sweet for Uganda, as they narrowly missed out on progressing in the previous Challenge League cycle due to a lower Net Run Rate than Jersey. This time, they have ensured their advancement with a match to spare.
However, questions linger regarding the exact implications of finishing as runners-up for future ODI status. While the qualification for the play-off is confirmed, some interpretations suggest that only group winners might be eligible for promotion to permanent ODI status in the next ICC Future Tours Programme cycle. The ICC is yet to provide a definitive clarification on this matter.
Despite this uncertainty, the Cricket Cranes have one final match in the Challenge League B against Bahrain. While the result will not affect their play-off qualification, it could influence their final standing and provide an opportunity to finish the campaign on a high note, potentially challenging Italy for the top spot if results go their way.
Coach Steve Tikolo has urged the team to approach the Bahrain match as their ‘final dance,’ emphasizing the importance of momentum heading into the critical play-off stage. After a mixed performance in the Dar es Salaam leg, including losses to Italy and Hong Kong, the Cranes aim to end the Challenge League B on a winning note.
