Civil servants in Budaka District are grappling with severe financial difficulties as their July salaries remain unpaid. The delay has left many struggling to meet basic household needs and other financial commitments, raising concerns about their economic well-being.

Employees are urgently seeking explanations from district authorities regarding the cause of the prolonged delay and a definitive timeline for when they can expect their salaries. This situation is particularly challenging as many households are already contending with the rising cost of living, making timely salary disbursement crucial for daily survival.

A letter from the deputy chief administrative officer, Mr. Anthony Egesa, dated August 5, cited “technical issues beyond their control” as the reason for the delay in salary and pension payments for July. The letter urged staff to remain calm while assuring them that relevant entities are addressing the matter and that updates would be provided.

However, some affected civil servants, speaking anonymously, expressed fears that the continued delays could exacerbate their financial predicaments, especially for those who have taken out loans against their salaries or rely solely on their monthly income. They have appealed for expedited processing and timely salary payments in the future.

Mr. Shaban Kabise, the district planner, confirmed the issue, attributing it to technical matters being handled by the Ministry of Finance. He indicated that employees are expected to receive their salaries in the following week. Budaka District employs approximately 1,730 civil servants, with teachers forming the largest group, and disburses around Shs7 billion in salaries quarterly.
