Iran has formally requested the release of three pilots it alleges were captured by Qatar. According to Iranian military official Brig Gen Mohammad Bagherzadeh, these pilots were taken into custody by Qatari forces after ejecting from their fighter jets during a combat mission targeting a Qatari military base. The incident is said to have occurred during the early stages of a war between the US and Iran.
In a letter addressed to the head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Iran detailed that the pilots – identified as Javad Salehi, Abdul Majid Dashtian, and Imran Behroshian – have been held captive for approximately six months. The same operation also resulted in the death of a fourth pilot, Majid Kazemi, whose remains were reportedly returned after his demise on March 2, 2026.
Brig Gen Bagherzadeh further accused Qatar of violating international laws and regulations by denying the pilots access to their families and legal counsel. However, Qatar has strongly refuted these claims, with its foreign affairs spokesperson, Majed Mohammed Al Ansari, expressing surprise at what they termed “misleading statements.”
Qatar stated that contact was made with the pilots after they reportedly violated Qatari airspace, asserting that “necessary measures were taken to defend our territory in accordance with international law.” The Qatari spokesperson added that their search and rescue teams fulfilled their duties in locating the pilots. Qatar also claims to have contacted Iran to arrange the handover of the recovered remains of one pilot and invited Tehran to review the details of the search and rescue operation, but has yet to receive a response.
