Ntungamo District is undergoing a significant economic shift, emerging as a new industrial center with substantial investments in coffee processing, mineral development, pig iron production, and agro-processing.

These developments are not only creating much-needed jobs and attracting private capital but are also spurring demand for improved infrastructure, including electricity, roads, and water.

In Rwashamaire, Inspire Africa Coffee Park is a prime example, transforming raw coffee into finished products and employing hundreds. The company aims to expand into agro-tourism and integrate local farmers, reducing Uganda’s reliance on raw coffee exports.

Similarly, the government is backing H5 Resources in Mwerasandu to develop a tin mine, boosting mineral production and employment. However, challenges such as mineral smuggling and the need for formalization persist.

At Kakukuru, TERRA Industrial Development has established East Africa’s first pig iron plant, processing local iron ore. Despite this progress, issues like unstable electricity and poor road networks pose potential constraints to sustained industrial growth.

District authorities are emphasizing that industrial expansion must go hand-in-hand with environmental protection. Securing and titling government land is also a key strategy to ensure adequate space for future investments and infrastructure projects.

The district anticipates increased local government revenue through various fees and taxes as industrial activity grows, with a current target of Shs1.8 billion for the financial year. This industrialization drive aligns with Uganda’s broader national goal of transitioning from subsistence farming to a modern, market-oriented economy.

The success of Ntungamo’s transformation hinges on addressing infrastructure deficits, ensuring reliable energy, and effectively managing land use, environmental concerns, and local community involvement.
