Government Joins Funeral Plans for Theatre Legend Alex Mukulu

Veteran Ugandan theatre practitioner Alex Mukulu, a celebrated figure in the country’s arts scene, is set to receive an official farewell following the government’s decision to participate in his funeral arrangements. This move comes as a recognition of Mukulu’s profound impact and his status as a national asset within the creative industry.
Discussions between the government and Mukulu’s family are currently underway, led by a committee that includes prominent members of the arts fraternity. According to committee spokesperson Abbey Mukiibi, the government’s involvement stems from acknowledging Mukulu’s invaluable contributions to Uganda.
“We are in negotiations with the family alongside the government because the government has joined in because Alex was a national asset who deserves an official send-off,” Mukiibi stated. The arts community plans to gather at the National Theatre on Tuesday afternoon for a collective mourning ceremony.
While the exact burial date is still being finalized, the committee is considering options between Thursday and Saturday, with a potential Monday burial also on the table to accommodate attendees from the arts community. The family’s desire for Mukulu’s children, some of whom reside abroad, to be present before the burial is also a factor influencing the schedule.
It has been confirmed that Mukulu passed away at Kiruddu Hospital due to liver complications. His death has left the Ugandan arts fraternity grappling with grief and the logistical challenge of honoring one of its most influential personalities. The organizing committee comprises family members, government representatives, and arts leaders, aiming to ensure a befitting tribute to Mukulu’s legacy as a storyteller, mentor, and cultural force.
