The South Korean-backed Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) has committed a significant investment of US$7 million, roughly Shs26 billion, to bolster environmental conservation and waste management efforts across Uganda.

The funding will be directed towards restoring degraded ecosystems, improving existing waste management infrastructure, and fostering innovative solutions for waste valorization – turning discarded materials into useful products.

Philip Muwanika, GGGI’s Country Coordinator, highlighted that the investment will facilitate in-depth research into the primary sources and areas of waste generation. This research aims to identify opportunities for converting waste into valuable commodities, thereby creating economic benefits.

“We want these funds to support environmental restoration, with a major focus on waste. We will research where waste comes from, the areas that generate the most waste and how it can be turned into something useful,” Muwanika stated.

Several Ugandan communities, including Nansana Municipality in Wakiso District, are expected to benefit from this program. These areas have been grappling with significant challenges related to waste accumulation and environmental degradation.

The initiative will also scrutinize activities contributing to waste, such as the handling and storage of perishable goods like meat, food, and fruits, with the goal of reducing spoilage and preventing edible items from becoming waste.

This commitment from GGGI follows a recent environmental awareness campaign by Nansana Municipality, which aimed to educate residents on conservation and proper waste disposal practices. Local authorities in Nansana have expressed their eagerness to forge partnerships to strengthen their environmental protection strategies, particularly concerning the preservation of vital wetland ecosystems.
