Hon. Col. Night Ikiriza, a Member of Parliament for the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) and Director of Human Resource Management at the Special Forces Command (SFC), recently addressed students at Kitende Secondary School. Speaking on behalf of SFC Commander Maj Gen. Asaph Mweteise Nyakikuru, Col. Ikiriza delivered a lecture emphasizing the critical importance of patriotism and a positive mindset for the youth.

Col. Ikiriza clarified that patriotism extends beyond mere symbols, stating it originates from self-respect, discipline, and good character. She challenged the students to take ownership of their actions and cultivate initiative rather than passively waiting for instructions.

Reflecting on Uganda’s history, she encouraged students to value the prevailing peace and actively contribute to its preservation. Col. Ikiriza strongly advised against tribalism, religious discrimination, and all forms of segregation, highlighting the significance of unity and mutual respect.

She also cautioned the students against negative influences such as corruption, theft, detrimental peer pressure, pornography, and the irresponsible use of social media. Instead, she urged them to remain focused on their education and develop the resilience and determination needed to overcome life’s challenges.

Col. Ikiriza stressed the value of hard work and perseverance, encouraging students not to be disheartened by temporary setbacks. She concluded by urging the students to appreciate their parents’ efforts and to strive for greater achievements, emphasizing that a disciplined, focused, and value-driven generation is essential for Uganda’s future. Patriotism, she noted, is ultimately demonstrated through action, responsibility, and service.
