Three Suicides Reported in Kigezi Region in Three Weeks

The Kigezi region has been shaken by three reported deaths by suicide over the past three weeks, prompting a public appeal from the police for individuals experiencing distress to seek help.

The latest incident occurred on August 13 in Kabale District, involving Babra Katusiime, a 20-year-old Senior Five student from Kigata High School. According to police spokesperson Nelson Tumushime, Katusiime was found deceased at her home. Initial reports suggest she had expressed not wanting to attend school due to a lack of an examination paper.

Earlier, on August 6, the body of Fredian Friday, a 53-year-old man, was discovered in his home in Kanungu District. Police indicated that Friday had been struggling with financial difficulties and significant debt.

The first of the recent cases was reported on July 27 in Kisoro District, where James Kamari, a 57-year-old teacher, died by suicide. Police have processed the scenes for all three incidents and are conducting further investigations.

Kigezi regional police spokesperson Nelson Tumushime emphasized the importance of seeking assistance rather than resorting to suicide. He encouraged anyone facing emotional turmoil, financial hardship, or family problems to confide in trusted family members, friends, or religious leaders for guidance and counseling.

“We encourage the members of the public to avoid committing suicide as a means of dealing with stress and depression. In case of stress, please get closer to a trusted family member or friend, religious leader for guidance and counselling,” Tumushime stated.
