Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa, has lauded the career of Dan Odongo, the Executive Director of the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB), as a prime example for public servants across the nation.

Speaking at the launch of Odongo’s memoir, “From Humble Beginnings: The Journey of a Teacher Who Rose to Lead a Nation’s Trust,” Tayebwa remarked that Odongo’s tenure at UNEB exemplifies true public service.

“When you are in a public office and you never see Parliament quarrelling with you or knocking on your door, you consider yourself a successful and diligent performer,” Tayebwa stated. He emphasized that Odongo’s leadership at UNEB has been marked by accountability and a lack of persistent controversy, setting a standard for all public officers.

Tayebwa further elaborated that Odongo’s life story underscores the principle that effective leadership is built on service, honesty, and commitment, rather than merely holding a title. “A title may open the door, but only one’s actions earn lasting respect,” he added.

The Deputy Speaker also highlighted Odongo’s journey from a rural background and teaching profession to leading a critical national institution, demonstrating the significant role teachers play in national development. He urged for greater investment in teachers, affirming that the classroom can be a powerful starting point for national service.

Odongo, who has led UNEB since 2016, authored the book to share the lessons learned over more than three decades in public service. He described his path from a humble village upbringing and challenging circumstances to leading the body responsible for national examinations as a journey of faith, discipline, and service.

The memoir details Odongo’s early life, education, teaching career, and his progression within UNEB, where he began as Assistant Secretary in 1989.

Attendees at the book launch, including parliamentarians and education stakeholders, commended Odongo for his integrity and urged other public servants to follow his model of consistent and dedicated service.
