Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Uganda, Wu Guangrong, has called upon Ugandan students receiving scholarships to China to become instrumental in strengthening the bond between their home country and China. Speaking to scholarship recipients, Ambassador Wu emphasized that these students are poised to play a crucial role in deepening bilateral relations upon their return.

Ambassador Wu articulated that while infrastructure connects cities, trade connects markets, and diplomacy connects governments, it is education that truly connects people. He described the scholarship beneficiaries as potential “bridges” and “new bonds” between Uganda and China, urging them to return with not only academic knowledge and professional skills but also a profound understanding of Chinese society and culture.

The ambassador noted the expanding scope of China-Uganda relations, which now encompass not just political cooperation but also significant engagement in infrastructure development, industrial growth, agriculture, healthcare, and education.

He expressed his impression of the strong interest in Uganda he observed prior to his diplomatic assignment, with many individuals eager to share their experiences and connections with the country. This enthusiasm, he stated, underscores the depth of relations and calls for an increased focus on people-to-people exchanges, especially as 2026 is designated the Year of People-to-People Exchanges between China and Africa.

Ambassador Wu urged the students to utilize their time in China to learn from its economic transformation, technological advancements, and focus on high-quality development. He specifically pointed to innovations in artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies as areas where Ugandan students can gain valuable insights applicable to their nation’s development. He also encouraged the building of lasting friendships, hoping the students would return with a comprehensive understanding of China and its people, thereby contributing to sustained, intergenerational China-Uganda relations.

This meeting marks one of Ambassador Wu’s initial engagements since arriving in Uganda, and he congratulated the students, wishing them success in their academic pursuits and future roles in connecting the two nations. This sentiment was reported by Nile Post.
