Tanzanian Rangers Arrested Following Death of Man in Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Three park rangers have been apprehended by Tanzanian police as investigations commence into the death of a young man and injuries sustained by his companion in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The incident occurred after the deceased and two others were detained by rangers on Wednesday morning.

According to reports, the men were traveling from Arusha to Babati on a motorcycle to attend a funeral but lost their way and reportedly entered the Ngorongoro Conservation Area without following proper procedures. One of the survivors, Abdallah Nuru, claims they were accused of poaching by the rangers, despite their explanations.

Nuru alleges that he and his companions, identified as Sefu Musa (25) and Salimu Haji, were subjected to brutal assault. He described being ordered to strip, roll in thorny bushes, and endure beatings, with rangers allegedly pouring water on them. Both Musa and Haji reportedly lost consciousness during the ordeal.

Nuru, though injured, managed to get his colleagues to a hospital. Sefu Musa was declared dead upon arrival, while Salimu Haji remains in critical condition. Police have stated that the rangers were arrested as part of the ongoing investigation.

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area has been a site of concern for human rights groups, with frequent allegations of excessive force, arbitrary arrests, and harassment by law enforcement in the name of conservation. Previous issues have included the forced relocation of Maasai communities, though authorities maintain these actions are necessary for protecting the area.
